Summer School 2011

Societies in Transition

Sub-Saharan Africa between Conflict and Reconciliation

After the great success of our first Summer School, which focused on Latin America, we plan a second event this summer 2011 (18th – 28th July 2011) with the title “Societies in Transition – Sub-Saharan Africa between Conflict and Reconciliation”.
The four main areas are South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and the former German Colonies, in particular Namibia. We will also address the responsibility of Europe, and other rich nations, for Africa.
At the centre of the summer school, there will be several lectures being held in the morning and four different workshops being held simultaneously in the afternoon. Furthermore, we plan three units with presentations of the participants, in order to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their own research projects. These elements will be supported by a varied framework programme.
Once more, we want to invite 30 excellent young scholars and several prestigious lecturers from various fields. They will have the opportunity to discuss about important issues, such as the process of coming to terms with the past or the possibility for reconciliation, with a focus on the recent history of Sub-Saharan Africa. The main disciplines we have in mind are political sciences, psychology, sociology, law, history, religious and cultural studies, and especially African studies.
