has studied theology, philosophy, linguistics and English literature in Tübingen, Edinburgh, Vienna and Cambridge/GB. He got his doctorate and his habilitation in systematic theology from Tübingen in 1977 and 1982. He has received several honorary doctorates. He has held teaching positions in systematic theology and philosophy of religion in Tübingen, Durham, Cambridge and Frankfurt. Since 1995 he has held the chair of systematic theology, symbolics and philosophy of religion in Zurich. Since 1998 he has been Director of the Institute of Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion in Zurich. His major areas of research are systematic theology in the 19th and 20th century, philosophical and theological hermeneutics in the 20th century; ecumenical theology; analytical and phenomenological philosophy of religion in the 20th century; religion and emotion; and evil.
